What’s Happening & Why Runoffs Matter
Houston heads into runoff elections for two key races; Houston City Council positions and TX-18 congressional district. In each of these contests, no candidate secured the required majority (over 50%) of votes during the November election, which in turn triggered a runoff between the top two finishers.
Runoffs ensure that elected officials have majority support, not just plurality, which is especially important in large fields of candidates or highly competitive districts. These races will determine who represents our communities on issues like public safety, infrastructure, housing, and federal priorities impacting Houston.
Stay tuned for clear, nonpartisan updates and voter guides for all upcoming elections.

A federal court has officially blocked Texas’ newly drawn congressional maps for the 2026 elections, ruling that several districts likely violate the Voting Rights Act. This decision temporarily halts the use of the proposed maps. State leaders have announced an appeal and the case could move quickly through the courts, potentially all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court and change this decision.
We continue to monitor the development of this case to ensure our community stays informed about any map changes that may impact representation, voting access, and district lines across Harris County.
